Subject:Brass or Bronze - Chinese or Japanese
Posted By: David C Sun, Sep 29, 2024 IP: 80.44.44.232

Hello All
Someone gave this to my wife. I think it is brass but it may also be bronze. Good patination and a humourous subject with the snail heading towards to grapes.30cm high. The decoration suggests Japanes, but the vase shape is a chinese Hu form I think. Could it be made in china for the Japanese market? A bit lost on this one. Might it be arround the C1900? It looks like it has never been cleaned. Has a good ring when tapped and is very heavy at nearly 2 kilos. Unmarked on the base and hasn't been moved for years as the base is a golden and clean. Sorry about the photos. Best wishes all.

To my eye this is most likely Japanese & either late Taishō or early Showa.
Unfortunately it looks like someone has taken to it with the brass-o in an attempt to clean it, the problem being it wasn't dirty, it originally would have been covered in a heavy brown-ish patination. This was a deliberate finish applied when the item was new and intended to remain on the item for its lifetime. This will drastically effect the price of this piece in the event you wanted to sell it.

Thanks Aaron
Good info
Can't see any residue of a brown covering. I cannot seem to get high resolution photos that are small without losing detail. The white patches look like leeching from the lead that might have been added at manufacture.
I greatly appreciate the efort you made.
Many thanks
D
