Subject:Japanese Mark Translations Please
Posted By: Robert Mon, Sep 16, 2024 IP: 172.59.138.8

Hi. I am requesting translations for the base marks on two Kyo-yaki vases. Although the marks are stylistically different, I believe that both vases were probably made in the same workshop in the late Meiji or Taisho era. Thanks!

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you very much. Assuming that my estimated dating for these vases is correct, i.e., late Meiji to very early Taisho, then they could have been made in the Kyoto workshop of KUSUBE Sennosuke 楠部千之助 (c1859-1941). I think the "Ninsei" name may have been added as an honorific or, more likely, to make the vases more salable.

Best regards,

Robert
