Subject:Any idea on period?
Posted By: Scott Tue, Sep 19, 2023 IP: 2601:2c0:8e01:a160:7

Two snuffs. One enamel on copper, one porcelain. Water coupe has Qianlong script mark blue underglaze. Usually this period is a seal mark, by emperor decree. I haven’t seen this script on any actual item images on web. All pieces have pinhole and bubble indicators of similar age. Provenance from 1963 purchase.

The doucai inkwell with phoenix decoration and apocryphal six-character Qianlong mark is Guangxu period (1875-1908), per comparison with an example in the Mainland-published “Collection of Classical Markings on Chinese Historical Porcelains” (Zhongguo lidai taoci kuanzhi dadian - 中国历代陶瓷款识大典).

In my opinion, the other two are Republic period to mid-20th century.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks. I thought maybe apocryphal but hoping it was from transition period @ 1736. The reference you gave me shows a six character red script apocryphal, and ive seen a few other red, such as on this vase link. Mine is blue…anything telling about red or blue?
Thanks in advance.

I guess just one more question if you don’t mind. Based on your extensive experience and the pics provided, do you see any condition issues beyond normal antique wear? I’m thinking of auctioning and good to describe properly. Thanks again.

Bill,
After much searching I found a very similarly detailed beehive shaped coupe displayed on an old auction site. It is described there as: CAI PORCELAIN WRITER'S COUPE 18th Century. See link below. A number of questions came to me, if you are able?
No mention there of it being apocryphal, so do you see something on mine distinct from the other to suggest mine is apocryphal and other is not? But, if not apocryphal why would it be script mark rather than seal mark which is standard for Qianlong period? Next, these two coupes are so nearly the same I wonder if from same artist or…?
Mine seems to have more wear around rim possibly from use? Does porcelain respond to use like that?

also wonder why an apocryphal would have 4 clawed dragon…in honoring past emperor why not have 5 claw?
