Subject:Japanese Lidded Pot
Posted By: Peter Mon, May 22, 2023 IP: 77.119.171.165

I've recently acquired a Japanese lidded post measuring c. 10cm in diameter.

It is hand painted and appears to be of quite good quality, although the gold maker's mark on the underside suggests a more recent production, specifically produced for export to the West.

I'd be interested to know if a specific Japanese porcelain producer sold their products under this specific brand. Perhaps the Japanese script may hold a clue.
Thank you for any assistance.

I googled the name ”Soho” and found dishes with the same mark described as “vintage”, meaning later than antique. In this case I would estimate it’s from the early 3rd quarter of the 20th century. I’d suggest that you use the name with Google for further research and indications of value.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Actually the marking reads:
湊光 Sōkō (not Soho)
Kōbe Satsuma marking from the 1950-60s or later.

After further research, it would appear that the name printed is 'Soko', rather than 'Soho'.

Thanks to the language Master, I.Nagy, I learn something new every day but still don't expect to learn Japanese fluently anytime soon.
