Subject:Satsumo?
Posted By: Clare Thu, Mar 16, 2023 IP: 203.18.63.112

Investigating what I think is a Japanese Satsumo tea set including bowl, milk jug and teapot and cover. Made 1850-1886. Can anyone guide me to who the artist is, period, technique, materials used please. Kind regards, Clare

This is Kutani ware, not Satsuma (also not Satsumo) ware. Date around 1900.
It's markes: Hayashi 林 Sei 製 (= made by Hayashi).
Hayashi was a Yokohama trader in Kutani ware, which means that the products were made in Kutani and (probably) painted in Yohohama and then shipped in Yokohama to Europe or the US.

No offends, but what intriges me is where did you got the date 1850-1886 from?
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you so much for replying and your valuable information! These items were purchased in 1886 from the Imperial University in Japan by a visiting professor. The dates mentioned were the information given to the professor at the time. Should the date be earlier?

Thanks for explaining, there were different ceramic artists with the name Hayashi active in the Meiji till Showa era. So it's possible this is from 1886.

Martin.

Would it be possible to ask where you obtained the information about this trader please as it is good to reference the source and maybe we need this source for further research?

I have database of Japanese ceramic marks with a number of Hayashi marks. I have some marks with 林製 横濱 日本 "Hayashi Sei - Yokohama - Nippon" which were retrieved from Japanese websites a number of years ago. But sorry, I don't keep track of my sources in this database. Anyway, on one of those sites was mentioned that Hayashi was a trader from Yokohama.
Regards,
Martin.
