Subject:Search info on Sinhalese manuscripts
Posted By: Niki Wed, Jan 04, 2023 IP: 212.186.68.6

Dear experts, recently I found a Sinhalese (?) manuscript.
Maybe someone has info about which prayer / ritual this is? From which period could it be?

I am looking forward to your answers

Hello,

Can anyone confirm this for me? Is it a Singhalese document at all?

Ich hoffe ich habe es richtig fotografiert und es steht nicht am Kopf :-)

this is definitely not sinhalese, but probably burmese or (less likely) balinese

Here is an image of a Burmese Kammavaca text with lacquered gilded leaves containing oaths sworn to by novice monks upon entering the monkhood. These elaborate "Burmese Bibles", as they are called by the unindoctrinated, usually donated to monasteries by relatives in honor of youthful novices at tonsure (head-shaving) ceremonies conducted before their three-month period of monastery training. Perhaps you can compare the script to yours.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your feedback! The hint that it might be a Singalese manuscript comes from the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies | University of Vienna. That was probably a mistake. I think Burmese could be more correct. :-)
