Subject:Old jade?
Posted By: Cedric Sun, Jan 01, 2023 IP: 194.233.96.182

Dear All,

I am new to this forum, so 1st things 1st: hello & Happy New Year!

I have recently bought this coiled dragon (which I like a lot) for an entirely reasonable price - even for a fake, which it probably is! And yes, I believe it is nephrite, certainly not soapstone or something equally soft.

As you may have guessed, I have huge doubts about the piece. Nonetheless, what surprises me is (a) that a faker, if he/she wanted to produce a C-shaped Hongshan dragon, would go through the enormous work of grinding the myriad of fine, raised lines (b) just to produce something entirely non-canonical, which must immediately raise suspicions.

I would be very grateful for all thoughts/comments/leads for further study that you may have!

You are right, to the novice this carving looks ancient.
Alas, it was made about 50 years ago, and altered to make it look old It is either Nephrite or Serpentine. A simple scratch test will tell.

Yes your assumptions were correct IMO.
It's a modern carving that has also been acid treated.

Just a quick update to my recent post.
I incorrectly posted that said was acid treated.
Said carving has been made to look old. But I do not know which technique was used.
