Subject:B&W PRUNUS AND CRACKED ICE GINGER JAR WITH MYSTERY MARK
Posted By: Bill H Tue, Nov 29, 2022 IP: 64.187.128.166

I've had this Cracked Ice & Prunus Jar around for ages and have never quite been able to decipher the mark, which is about postage stamp size and brushed on in a blue that has bled into the surrounding glaze. The first one at top right seems to be "Ru/如/such as" and the one on the bottom right somewhat resembles "Chan/産/Product". I'M pretty sure the character in the lefthand stack is "Zao/造/Made" and totally guessing the hazy one above it is "Zhi/製/manufacture".

I estimate the circa 9-inch tall jar was made at a popular kiln (minyao), perhaps as a container for preserved ginger, circa the mid 19th century and judging by the relatively clean base, perhaps before the Taiping Rebels seized and laid waste to Jingdezhen in 1856.

Hopefully our learned companion I.Nagy can cast a more definitive opinion.

Best regards,

Bill H.
