Subject:Looking for identification for a possible Kano Yasunobu scroll
Posted By: jack venti Mon, Nov 07, 2022 IP: 2a0d:5600:8:9e:ae::1

Cannot find the seal, I know that it was extensively used in the Kano school. The signature reads Yasunobu but the seal, I couldn't identify.

Thank you!

Signature;
安信筆 - Yasunobu-hitsu - Painted by Yasunobu
The jar-shaped artistic seal reads;
安信  - Yasunobu

It was used by Kanō Yasunobu

With regards,

Wow, thank you so much! so it is possible that the scroll is a Yasunobu authentic one. Could you please give me a reference/link for the jar hanko, because I spend hours looking on the net and found nothing.
Also maybe you can recommend a good seal encyclopedia?

it is always amazing to see how careless are reproduced again and again old, incorrect woodblock prints in Japanese art publications.
The seals posted look very much the wood block prints in my Kano Sosen seal collection.

Seals should only be compared to real paintings. A seal in a book unrelated to a real artwork you can check it with is not really a reference you can trust.
I could not find the jar, but the boukshinsai seal I have plenty at home and in the painting in the Met one could easy see how far of is your book from the real seal:
https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/55292

The jar seal on the posted artwork is also much better carved than the seal in the book 日本畫家典. As in the painting itself quality should be considered for the seals too.

So no, I do not think there is a good book on Japanese seals.

as this seems to be a handscroll it would be good to see the whole artwork. Based on the two pics you posted, I would say the Kansan Jittoku piece looks very much like a Yasunobu figure painting. I could provide you with photos of a set with this topic, but would not post it as I do not know who owns this now.
The white heron is also very high quality but is quite elegant. I have never seen a painting like this but he is certainly able to do this.

In case you want a serious opinion, you would need to show the painting. Peter
