Subject:Hotel Ware teacup - RoC era? Unknown maker's mark.
Posted By: Todd Tue, Oct 25, 2022 IP: 108.95.23.81

Greetings,

Have this tea cup from what a hotel in Guangzhou or Shanghai; trying to figure out the mark on the bottom. I wasn't able to find it in any online resource. Hopefully this mark would tell me more, specifically a date range. Thanks!

The mark reads "Chosen by and Made for the Golden Sea Company" (Jin hai gong si xuan zao - 金海公司選造). Google is devoid of references to this mark as is the latest "Marks on Chinese Ceramics" book published by Gerald Davison. However, the mark looks obviously to date to the pre-PRC Republic era, as otherwise the "Xuan" character would most likely would have been simplified as "选".

Good luck,

Bill H.
