Subject:Clay Money Bank From ?
Posted By: Dave H Thu, Sep 29, 2022 IP: 23.230.46.98

Just throwing this on here as a long shot as I'm hoping someone here may know about this or be able to point me in the right direction. Money banks have been around for thousands of years from around the world and mainly in the shape of a pig. This to appears to be either a hedge hog or a well fed snake (rattle on the tail).
I have had no luck finding on where & when this is from and time frame made.

All opinions and thoughts welcome. Thanks to all .....

It certainly looks to be Asian or south Asian. There are the well known "piggy" banks/money boxes from east Java in Indonesia, circa 14th-15th century. The earliest English and European pottery money boxes also appear to date from around the 14th century. Supposedly, the Chinese were making pottery money boxes from at least the Han dynasty. Most if not all of these containers had to be broken in order the retrieve the coins, but your box appears to have a round hole at the bottom fitted with a cork. Not sure what to make of this feature.

Thanks for your input Robert. I agree that it is not from the 14th - 16th century and am not sure when they started to make money banks with cork plugs to take out the coins. With the cork being on the bottom it is different as most I have seen the cork is at the rear.
Maybe it is a mythical creature of some sort and as you mentioned maybe from Asia...
Thanks again & have a good one .....
