Subject:Japanese Shrine Translation Help needed
Posted By: BL Mon, Aug 22, 2022 IP: 74.71.16.159

Hello Everybody,
There is writing on the bottom of a shrine that I recently purchased. I'm not sure how unusual that is. I would appreciate any help in the translation of those characters. Thanks.

The lenghty difficult Buddhist ceremonial text on the base was written at the ritual of the shrine`s soul insertion (opening eyes) ceremony that made the shrine an object of worship.
According to the inscription the ceremony was held at the Honmonji* (本門寺) temple on the 13th April of the 2nd -Wood-Rooster- Hoei Year (1705)
(宝永第貮乙酉年四月十三日)

* Today`s Ikegami Honmonj Temple (池上本門寺) in
Tokyo

With regards,
I.Nagy
