Subject:Awaji ? vase
Posted By: Sally Wed, Jul 27, 2022 IP: 84.71.160.26

Hello All at AAF.
This yellow glazed vase is 9" tall. I think it might be from Awaji and am intrigued by the black painted marks on the base. Can anyone tell me what the marks signify and if indeed the vase is likely to be from Awaji.
Thank you for your time and interest

The mark reads 13: 十三 (ju-san), which is not a typical mark for Awaji ware. On Awaji ware the bottom is almost always glazed as well and has marks like a bird with 2 mountains (danto chidori), a double diamond shape (smaller diamond inside the bigger one) or the Sanpei flag (mark of the Sanpei kiln), ofter together with "Japan" or "Made in Japan".
I have no idea what the origine of this vase is.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you Martin,
very intriguing. I did wonder if it said something like 'second'. it's quite an unsuccessful pot in that the neck leans to one side, the glaze has black and brown marks, is uneven and pooled at the bottom, that and the rough finish of the base makes me think it was an experiment that didn't quite work. Iguess we can say its Japanese , precise origin unknown. Thanks again, Sally
