Subject:Blue & White Earthenware Bowls
Posted By: Marilyn L Wed, Jun 08, 2022 IP: 2601:285:8380:7bc0::

Hi all, I found these bowls at an estate sale and and would like your take on them. They are 6.75" wide and 2.75 high. It's interesting that one is heavier than the other.
Thank you!

These pieces are classic "Farmer's Hat" bowls produced circa 1850. They also belong to a variety of dishes called "Kitchen Qing". Here are links to pictures and my response ages ago to a forum query concerning similar Chinese wares.

Your first bowl, as shown above, has an underglaze blue mark inside of "Ji" - (記), "To make a record of or recorded) in a double square field, with an owner-incised mark above it of "Mu" (目), the eyes or to see. This probably indicates the bowl was used in a restaurant and the owner was giving notice that thievery of dishes was being watched out for.

Best regards,

Bill H.
