Subject:Green Chinese bowl - Chinese Celadon?
Posted By: Niels Sat, May 21, 2022 IP: 81.206.192.242

Hi, I'm looking for information about this ceramic bowl. It is one of a set of two identical bowls I've purchased years ago in a local antique/ thrift store. It is very finely potted and has embossing on the inside. Does anyone know that this type of ceramic? Is it Chinese? A modern replica or does it have some age?

Thanks in advance for your reply. Kind regards, Niels (Holland)

Niels,

The larger and clearer image of the base makes me wonder if your bowls are relatively modern copies. The clay (paste) is a little too rough/granular compared to most qingbai porcelain wares and there is usually some burnt glaze left on the base, whereas your bowls have exceptionally neat and clean bases. You should seek an expert's opinion.

To be honest, I have not seen a qingbai with this color or design. It may not even be Chinese. Korean (?)

Niels,

Try Google searching "Chinese Qingbai conical 'boys' bowl, Song dynasty". Although such bowls are not extremely rare or expensive, finding two of them in a thrift store is remarkable. Recommend you seek out a reputable Asian art auction house for a hands-on evaluation.

Best of luck,

Robert
