Subject:Japanese pottery - style?
Posted By: Sue Wed, May 18, 2022 IP: 184.53.33.11

I am interested in knowing the name of the style of this pottery piece. I don’t have a makers mark (not mine) but I know it was purchased in Japan. When it was accidentally broken, the technique was revealed (see two pics of broken edge). Note the terra cotta (?) is raised and revealed as a design after glazing. Also attached is a pic of a complete bowl. The outside of the bowl is red, and it is a footed bowl.

I’m interested I. The technique, not necessarily the maker.

Thanks in advance.

The technique of cutting or scraping away an outer slip or glaze layer to reveal a colored clay body is often referred to as 'sgraffito'. But your bowl was probably decorated using stencils; basically a resist technique that in this case achieves almost the same decorative effect as sgraffito.
