Subject:Bamboo Pot Chinese?
Posted By: Gareth Wed, May 18, 2022 IP: 84.71.140.15

Good Morning,

this is my first post after being recommended this forum. I have recently found a bamboo pot if feel it has some real age and is well made but possibly too crude for a Chinese pot. I wondered if someone could have a look at the attached photos. I feel it might be from the Indian subcontinent but most pots of this type seem to be described as Chinese brush pots
Many thanks Gareth

Can you give some dimensions?
Does it open?

Brush pots I have seen tend to be cylindrical, taller than their diameter, and without lid or closure.

Your sense of its age perhaps comes from the edge checks, which can be misleading; too-rapid drying can hasten such checking.

The carving top & bottom, as well as the finely done checkering in the main field and multiple, evenly divided woven patterns, all point to considerable skill in execution. Very nice piece of bamboo!

Good morning Warren thanks for the swift response.

The pot is lidded and the dimensions are 12cm tall by 9.5cm diameter. The pot has old woodworm holes. The icon of the tiger and crocodile is that common?,did they use such pots elsewhere?

Many thanks and regards Gareth

The Canis attacking a reptile is familiar to me from old natural history exploration book engravings. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which one. Might have been Stanley's in Africa, c1870s. The eagle looks like one of the early representations of the US eagle. Can't say why the two were carved on the same item but maybe this will give you direction toward more research. In any event, nice piece.

Thanks Steve, it’s a real mystery but thank you so much for your ideas.
