Subject:Small Japanese jar with a red mark "Arita"?
Posted By: Fahre Tue, May 03, 2022 IP: 2a02:a03f:a04f:2500:

Hello,

I was able to buy this little lidded jar.
I think it's "arita" porcelain
Could you help me translate the red mark.
Do you have any idea given the size of the pot (7 centimeters), what it could contain originally.
Thanks very much

I have no idea where this jar was used for.

The mark reads: Zoshuntei 蔵春亭 Saibo 西畝 Zo 造 (Zoshuntei made by Saibo).

Zoshuntei is an early company name or trademark in use between 1842 to 1870. Zoshuntei was started by Hisatomi Yojibei Masatsune and his oldest son Hisatomi Yojibei Masayasu (1812-1878). Saibo is assumed to be one of the artistic names of Hisatomi Yojibei.

However, the name might also be Seibo, Saiho or Seiho (Sino-Japanese reading) or Nishiune (native Japanese reading).

Regards,
Martin.
