Subject:Is this a Zeshin Print?
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Thu, Apr 28, 2022 IP: 129.74.160.169

Hello All,

I have seen this print identified as being by Shibata Zeshin, but the signature and seal (enlarged here) don't seem to match any of the many other examples available online. Is anyone (I. Nagy?) able to read the signature and seal? Thank you in advance.

Dear J. Boussinesq,

One thing I can say sure that this print is not the work of ShIbata Zeshin.
I read the signature;
景岳 - Keigaku
or 景岡 - Keiko (Kageoka)

The first character undoubtedly reads 景
I can't find painter with this name, however,
the number of known Japanese painters whose art-name begin with 景 exceeds one hundred.

Seal reads,
嗜過我癖 - Tashinami-sugi waga kuse - Excessive modesty is my habit

I checked 5 signature and 23 seal samples from
Shibata Zeshin in the "Collection of Japanese Calligraphers' and Painters' Signatures and Seals - Kashiwa Shobo" - they were all different.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you again for the reading. I have been able to find three examples of 景岳 (see link) but am not able to find any signatures or seals online. This identity may have to remain one of the many mysteries in these types of prints.
