Subject:Chinese Painting
Posted By: Richard A Rodney Wed, Dec 22, 2021 IP:

I acquired this Chinese watercolor painting that has no visible seals or inscriptions. I am hoping there might be some under the large mat but as of now, I have not wanted to open the frame. Does anyone recognize the style as belonging to a particular artist or school? Also, what is the story represented? Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

strangely it seems to be imitating a woodblock print.

The scene seems to be illustrating a garden scene from Hongloumeng (Story of the Stone) showing Jia Baoyu and likely Lin Daiyu (see with Xue Baochai or a maid looking on.

Thank you, rat! I appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the Story of the Stone.

I wonder why the artist included a crosshatch rectangle in the left corner. It seems so out of place. What could it represent?

Kind regards,
