Subject:Japanese Scroll ID
Posted By: Richard Mon, Dec 20, 2021 IP: 72.227.229.225

Hi Forum Members,

I am looking for some assistance in identifying the maker and inscription on this Japanese scroll featuring the Seven Lucky Gods. Any thoughts on age would also be appreciated. It came with a wooden box with writing that I can post if it would help.

Thanks so much!
Richard

Your painting is in the style of the Kanou School, probably 18th century. It was unsigned or the signature was cut off to add later a completely meaningless inscription saying to be painted by Maruyama Oukyo.
This turned the scroll into a forgery. Its a most annoying type of a forgery as it destroyes the original painting to get a very bad forgery.

甲午初春燈下寫 - In the Beginning of Spring of the Year of Wood-Horse (1774) Painted at Lamplight
應擧 Ōkyo
Upper seal,
應擧之印 - Seal of Ōkyo
Lower seal,
仲選 - Chūsen (Courtesy name of artist)

I don't know what is the "kao" like thing under the signature.

Maruyama Ōkyo 圓山應擧 1733-1795

Thank you I.Nagy and Peter for your invaluable help. I've included photos of the wooden box which I assume was made later for the scroll. Not sure if this sheds any further light on whether or not the painting was made by Maruyama Oukyo, but any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
Richard

Pic.1,
七福神 - Shichifukujin - Seven Lucky Gods
Pic.2,
円山應擧筆 - Painted by Maruyama Ōkyo
Pic.3,

Otherwise, I share Peter's opinion.
