Subject:Request help identifying calligraphy on Lacquer Box
Posted By: Roger Sat, Dec 04, 2021 IP: 2601:281:d300:975:4d

Hi All!
Here's some pics of a recent purchase of a Japanese Lacquer box. It's quite old I think. I would greatly appreciate your help in reading the marks/stamps on the lid. Thank you!
Also, do you know what type of box this is. My pic is just of the lid. The outside of the box is like tree bark and the inside is smooth.

It seem to be the lid of a round shaped trinket box or multi-purpose container.
The lid is decorated with pictures of later Edo period coins. (An auspicious decoration)
Middle; An oval gold coin (called Koban)
Right: Kanei tsuho (寛永通宝)- face and tail
Bottom; 細倉當百 (Hosokura Tohyaku) - face and tail
Top; Unrecognizable

It could be dated to the beginning of the 2oth century.

With regards,
I.Nagy
