Subject:Satsuma Artist
Posted By: David C Fri, Nov 26, 2021 IP: 84.67.134.207

Dear All
I am struggling with another mark which despìte my efforts eludes me. The top left character looks so similar to many but at the same time so unlike any. I have taken a while to understand some of the characters and have included my laughable effort in with the seal proper. Hopefully it'll bring a smile.
Many thanks in advance.
My best wishes
D

The mark reads: Hododa 保土田 Zo 造 - Dai Nippon 大日本 (Made by Hododa - Great Japan).

Mark of Takichi Hododa born in 1868 in Kanagawa.
In 1893 he opened his store in Yokohama: Hododa Shoten.
In 1897 he became a manufacturer and exporter of Satsuma ware, fine arts, curiosities, etc. from Yokohama to the USA and Europa. So from that time on, it's likely that Satsuma pieces with Hododa's name were made for him and not by him.

Regards,
Martin.
