Subject:Satsuma Plate Signature
Posted By: Peter Tue, Nov 16, 2021 IP: 178.115.35.192

Hello.
I'd be grateful if anyone were able to translate the signature on this Japanese Satsuma plate, which measures c. 25cm in diameter.

Any help will be much appreciated.

The mark reads Koshida 越田. I have no idea how old this is.

Koshida seems to have been a prolific maker of Satsuma from at least the 1880's. Much of their production was decorated by some of the best artists and bears the artists marks as well as the mark of Koshida. Koshida would have closed about the same time as the Kinkozan factory, circa 1927, but some sources claim the studio continued till the 1960's, with a temporary stop during WW2.

Regards,
Martin.
