Subject:Help identifying Japanese scroll painting?
Posted By: Pete Wed, Nov 03, 2021 IP: 161.11.160.52

Hello,

I have what I think is a Japanese scroll painting on paper. It measures about 35" long. Does anyone have any idea of the artist, age, and subject? I have uploaded two photos including a closeup of the writing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A typical ukiyo-e scroll painting, probably commissioned, depicting a high ranking courtesan (prostitute of the Yoshiwara, the licensed pleasure quarters in Edo) and her two child attendants (kamuro) on parade under a cherry blossom branch.
Signed 'Hakuunsai ga' (白雲斎画, painted by Hakuunsai) and sealed 'Hakuunsai' (白雲斎). Date ca. 1815-1825.

Did not find futher information on this artist's name.

Guy.
