Subject:Export Rose Mandarin Plate
Posted By: GerryG Wed, Oct 27, 2021 IP: 86.44.198.223

I thought I'd share this plate I acquired some time ago. Export rose mandarin, probably early to mid Qianlong by the look of the foot rim and colours. I think it delightfully painted with great facial expressions and flowing movement. I was also drawn to the background grey blue pattern on the border. I haven't come across that before and thought it put the plate in the superior bracket. Dimensions are 23 cms/9 inches in diameter. Condition is good with the odd bit of glaze loss. Any other comments are welcome as always.

Regards

Gerry

Rose mandarin is a term given to later work that demonstrates actual roses in stylized vivid pinks. This is a much earlier product of Chinese export utilizing the famille rose palette. It dates from the mid 18th century period.

Yes plasticman, you're absolutely right, I was being somewhat lazy with my terminology. Rose Mandarin really only came into being end of second quarter 19th century, if I recall correctly. Bill H, from your description, your plate is almost propaganda not unlike the old Soviet posters from the 1920s/30s. Even your Oxen look happy and content. Is the chap beside the child flying a kite? I thought maybe so as a few of the others in the group are looking skywards. Nice touch if so.
On my plate, there seems to be a tower with a cross atop in the background, would this suggest some Christian influence or signify something else?

Thanks for your comments. Always appreciated.

Gerry

The Jesuits were active in China during the Qianlong reign, including Giuseppe Castiglione aka Lang Shining, an accomplished artist who had influenced the Imperial Kiln since the Kangxi reign before he died in Beijing on 17 July 1766. Whether this is a cross or something else on your dish isn't clear to me, as it also could be gourds hung to attract swallows or other nesting birds.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Here are a couple of images of a mid-Qianlong-period (1736-95) circa 9-inch 'Canton' enamels plate having a few rim chips but fairly well preserved famille rose enameling of a riverside view of life, signaling through the a contemplitative and apparently satisfied mix of residents, servants, large flocks of birds in the air, plump children about and rice bags on boats that all is well with them under the Emperor. I acquired it in Middleburg, Virginia, not far West of Washington, DC more than a dozen years ago.

Possibly a variation of the same theme by a different artist or artists in the case of your dish. All comments welcome in this case too.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Both plates are quite grand. In my humble opinion, the one with diaper border is slightly earlier. The gilt scroll border and more "pink rose " color is a bit later. Both are from the 1735-1740 period and are delightful to see. The cross cap on a tower is not necessarily a religious symbol, but is often seen on buildings that are included in wares made for export.

Thanks Plasticman, interesting to hear about the cross being often included on similar export ware pieces.
