Subject:Help Identifying Antique Shaman Mask or Cham Mask, Nepal
Posted By: David Mon, Sep 06, 2021 IP: 68.1.172.169

Hello, I have what I suspect to be either a shaman's spirit mask or a Cham mask, possibly of a dharmapala, with two Tibetan fox carvings on the forehead. The wood appears to be raktachandan, also known as zitan, bloodwood, and red sandalwood and has a strong aroma. This piece was originally acquired sometime around the 1960s or 70s and was part of an extensive collection of Nepali and Himalayan tribal art. The only other example I could find of a mask that was somewhat similar to this and made of this material is a Gurung mask from the 19th century. Any opinions regarding the function and use of this mask, possible age, rarity, and who the face might represent would be much appreciated. Thank you.
