Subject:Vase - Any Opinions ?
Posted By: Peter Fri, Sep 03, 2021 IP: 178.165.179.48

I've been once again offered the opportunity to purchase this quite attractive vase, standing c.33cm in height.
The buyer maintains that the vase is 'probably' from the Republic era, but I've got my doubts. The base, for instance, looks a bit too 'newish' for my liking.
However, I'm only an amateur collector, so would very much appreciate to hear what the more experienced collectors on the forum have to say.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Hi Peter,
Firstly the vase is blurry. Especially when I try and expand the images.
The design at the lip and base were often seen during the very late Republic period through to the early PROC. So late 40's through to the 50's. The base has a stamped faux Qianlong mark (1736-1795). The central figures depicted were typically seen on republican period porcelain vases.
It's my opinion that it's unlikely to be from the Republic period (1912-1949). But more likely to be from the 50's or early 60's.
The theme of the artwork is in my opinion very republican styling. This did change during the PROC to reflect the changing political climate.
1960's/70's painted figures facial features were painted with a more sweet look about them.
The central figures appear to be hand painted. But very often the top and bottom willow effects were often printed.

It is late Republican, probably late 1940's.
The reason I know is that I bought a similar vase used as a lamp.
Inside it were old newspapers dated 1947-8.

Hi Sean,
Similar does not make it republican. Nor do old newspapers stuffed inside vases.
The vase is very nice but in all probability it could be earlier late Republic period or early PROC.
Items like these due to the closeness of either periods would need to be handled.
