Subject:MANCHURIAN WARLORD MILITARY DAGGER
Posted By: Adam Tue, Jul 20, 2021 IP: 75.35.100.18

I purchased the dagger from an estate sale in Canada. It had a lot of Chinese artifacts. The auctioneers told me this was a Manchurian warlord military dagger. I do not know if it's real or fake. I would love to know what it says and why it has a pirate symbol. Somebody suggested navy but I'm not sure. Any help would be awesome. Thank you

This is a modern fake "pirate dagger", nothing to do with any Manchurian warlord.
Inscription,
奎达夫商人号 - "Quedagh Merchant"
was the name of the 17th c. privateer Captain Kidd's famous pirate ship.
It is particularly interesting to see on the upper part of the scabbard the silhouette of Hungarian Coat of Arms.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The dagger looks like an Hungarian paratrooper dagger from the 1930s. There are many of them with pirate symbols. Thank you for your help. I would have not found it if it wasn't for you. I still don't know if it's real or fake thou

Please let me know if you think it could be fake or real. It look just like a Hungarian paratrooper dagger. But why have that pirate on there?

Thank you

I am not an expert on daggers, but I have seen a lot of fake Chinese artefacts - so I can say surely that this is a fake item incl. the blade. I visited some Hungarian language sites regarding Hungarian dress daggers of the time. According to them all dress daggers made between the two world wars in Hungary were marked "Mészáros Lajos Budapest" with a small Hungarian coat of arms (maker's mark) beneath their hilts (like on your attached Catawiki link).
