Subject:chinese vase with 6 character mark to base
Posted By: richard Thu, Jul 15, 2021 IP: 81.148.181.160

Good morning all, could any of the experts point me in the right direction of this vase and what the 6 character mark means?
What is the vase used for, is it old, is it genuine or is it a later reproduction item?
The vase is approximately 21 cm high.
Any answers and your time to reply is appreciated as always. Stay safe.
Best Wishes Richard

It's a early Ming mark.
Unfortunately it's not ming. It's a very modern interpretation.
Decorative value only.

Dear Mark, thank you for your reply. Much appreciated as always.
Maybe a stupid question, but may i ask you how you can tell that this is a later reproduction Ming vase? Is it the mark to the base, not enough detail etc or can you maybe recommend a good book, with photo's for me to buy and read about this subject? I hope you don't mind me asking, but I find this chinese porcelain ever so interesting.
I am trying to learn some basic guidelines in how to detect copies from (possibly) the real thing
So far with little luck dare i say and I seem to be building up a nice collection of fake chinese artefacts.....;¬)
Thank you in advance for your reply.
Kind Regards

Richard

Hi Richard,
The stiffness of the way it has been painted. It's been done so in haste. The enamels look too bright but this could be the camera.
The lack of any soft flaws. One would normally see on a Ming or Qing example. In other words it looks new.
There are a lot of reference material currently on the market. I can recommend you visiting www.bidamount.com
There you will find the reference section that has over 500 (I think from memory) auction catalogs and books. Best of all its free!
Collecting chinese porcelain is great but the journey can be filled with fakes. It's important in the start to try and gain knowledge through books, auction catalogs, museums and most importantly handling said pieces from high-end auction house like christies, sotheby's and bonhams.
I would only by from either of these three auction rooms or know dealers of repute.
Hope this helps you.
Regards,
Mark@imperial

Fantastic and thank you both for sharing your knowldege. It is just what I was looking for!
All nice and well to say oh yes it is a fake and bla bla bla but I would like to understand and learn (as a novice)why and how to tell a fake from the genuine item.
I also do appreciate how very difficult this can be!
So once again thank you for sharing your knowledge and links for some reading and further research. Much appreciated. Stay safe, stay healthy Richard
