Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Fri, Jun 11, 2021 IP: 69.120.217.178

Hi All,
A very well hollowed transparent purple banded snuff bottle, bulbous with a slightly concave oval foot, flat foot rim. some interesting inclusions are interspersed among the waves of bands
a symbol of divinity and immortality, purple was an imperial color.
the bottle seems to fit in a category of small well hollowed banded stone bottles, but I have not found another purple banded example such as this one

Hoping someone might be able to share information about the stone.

H: 11 11/16"; 4.28cm
Mouth: 7/32"; .55cm
Thank you for looking

Kind regards

Kevin

I think you have to look in the Quartz family to get the right name for it.

In my opinion, from your photos it looks like a bottle carved from amethyst. Amethyst is quartz (SiO2) with trace iron that was irradiated by gamma radiation in the host rock during crystal growth.

Forgot to mention: Color zoning or banding occurs due to changes in mineral composition during crystal growth.
