My Chinese wife thinks it's a good luck charm of a stylized insect, possibly a cricket.

Indeed, your wife can have it in her hands , she can easily study it. With that photo, no way.
If it is a Cicada, perhaps it attracts live ones.
Do you live in in Vancouver, BC Canada?

Appears to be Shou, a Chinese character that means longevity or long life. It may be upside down though.
