Subject:Antique chinese censer - any thoughts?
Posted By: Argentina Wed, Jun 02, 2021 IP: 4.59.126.227 Hello everyone. I recently acquired the attached censer in an estate sale. Its definitively old, quite heavy and has no visible markings unfortunately...hence I haven't been able to get any information about this piece. |

The teapot form suggests it is more recent and it lacks piercing to allow smoke to escape. Possibly a tourist piece as it looks like the maker wanted to please all comers by featuring several main Asian elements: elephant, lion, and dragon. All often seen, but not all together on one piece. |

Posted By: Argentina Fri, Jun 04, 2021 You are spot on! I eventually managed to find this item for sale from an Indonesian site, definitively 20th century. It is remarkable how much information you could get out of a single picture. Slightly disappointed here, I thought this piece had much richer history...I do really like it nonetheless so it will definitively get a nice spot in my house. Thank you once again! |
