Subject:Unknown Woodblock Print of Invasion/Attack
Posted By: Pete Wed, May 12, 2021 IP: 2603:7080:b044:b200:

Hello, I have an old woodblock print of what appears to be a man with a knife about to attack a couple. If anyone has any information about this print such as the artist or era, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Artist's signature,
Painted by Baidō Kunimasa
Round seal above the signature,
Notification: On 26th February of the 11th Year of Meiji (1878)

Left of the signature,
Artist: Takeuchi Eikyu (another art-name) + address
Kajikawa Kyuzaemon + address

Title,
Mon no Matsu Haru no Torioi -
Gate Pine and Spring Minstrel

Man with the knife,
Setta Naoshi Ǒsaka
Kichi
Lady,
Minstrel, Ohatsu
Man,
Helper of Matsuya, Chuzō

Probably depicts the climax of a story well known to contemporaries.

Baidō Kunimasa
One of the art-names used by Utagawa Kunisada III
1848-1920

With regards,
I.Nagy
