I am trying to find out about this Antique scroll we have been fortunate to acquire. It has a wooden box as well that has an inscription on the outside as well as what we think is the artist's signature on the scroll. Would appreciate all the help anyone could send!

Shūgetsu Tōkan 秋月等觀　（？-1529？）
Tōkan (Buddhist law-name)
Shūgetsu was a Zen Buddhist Painter in the late Muromachi period. Born in Satsuma as a vassal of the Shimazu clan under the name Takagi Shigekane.
Later he took the tonsure and became a monk and joined Sesshū Tōyō 雪舟等楊　as a disciple. In his later years he became the chief priest of Satsuma
Fukushō-ji Temple. Between 1493 and 1495 he spent two years in Ming Dynasty China.

It does indeed look very old! I am trying to find a reputable place to get it appraised.

Is this a self portrait based on the wooden box script? I uploaded three more pics with the whole script and the end of the box script.

signature and box say 秋月筆 shuugetsu hitsu. shuugetsu toukan 秋月等観 is a 16th century painter. with you images I am afraid your scroll does not convince me to trust this attribution.

Why do you say you would not trust attribution?

It is not a self-portrait. It depicts Rinzai Gigen
臨濟義玄 in Chinese Lin-chi I-hsűan　(-867)；the founder of the Lin-chi (Rinzai) School, one of the five Zen schools in China.

I guess next steps are try to find a reputable dealer to obtain appraisal.

I only see your small blurred photos to form an opinion, based on this the impression I get is not convincing. The box is pretty new (100y) too. One has to see all the details of the painting, close ups of the surface to judge the age better. Even if the painting has the age, it does not mean automaticly it bears the correct signature....
Has the painting older appraisels attached?
