Subject:Fan copy seal?
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Sun, May 02, 2021 IP: 99.110.2.80

Hello All,

I was looking at a fan that is a copy of one of Kamisaka Sekka's prints from Momoyogusa. (Or less likely, Sekka copied this fan.) Can anyone (I. Nagy?) read the enlarged seal on this fan? This is the best image I could get, but it is not as clear as it might be. Thanks in advance.

Maybe, I am wrong, but I read the seal,
田而行之
Classic Japanese reading of this literary Chinese sentence.
田(でん)に而(し)て之(これ)を行(や)らん
Den ni shite kore wo yaran
Den is the one who did this

I think it explains everything.

With regards,
I.Nagy

In the meantime, I found a better possible reading,
由而行之
Wake ni shite kore wo yaran - I did this for a reason.
The top stroke of character 田 or 由 is not clear enough.

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you, this is helpful. It must be a copy by some unknown person.
