Subject:Mysterious Cabinet with Detailed Carving
Posted By: Alexa Fri, Apr 30, 2021 IP: 2601:14f:4402:b0e0:a

Hello, I would like to find out any information about this cabinet. Any idea where it's from, time period or purpose? A relative purchased it in the 1970's. Any information about the piece would be greatly appreciated!

PS: I posted a similar message a few days ago but did not provide valid image links. Hopefully, this link works better. Thanks!

That's a very nice cabinet. It's definitely Chinese.

Those panels look like the sorts you would get decorating some houses. The question is: are they old ones taken from houses and mounted into this piece or are they just "in the style of". Some closer and more detailed pics might help.

It doesn't look terribly old (1970s would be about right) but that doesn't necessarily mean that the panels themselves aren't. Again, closer photos are required.

I would guess that this was made for western tourists as opposed to actually being made "for the Chinese" and its purpose would be that of any other cabinet.

Hope this helps,

This is so helpful! Thank you very much, Suzume :)

I'm attaching a close-up that I have on hand (and have updated the folder) but I'll get more pics of the panels soon. If you're able to discern anything from the attached pic, please let me know. Thanks again!

Nice and interesting cabinet you have posted here.
In my opinion it's pernekian or straits Island styled furniture from the mid 20th century. Perhaps even a little bit later. So 1950's - 1970's.
I can't be more specific without further images.
