Subject:set of Japanese Satsuma Vases
Posted By: Kathy Whalen Fri, Apr 23, 2021 IP: 2601:80:8401:d4d0:71

I inherited two vases and I am trying to get some historical information. I want to understand what is depicted on them. From what I can gather so far, I believe they are earthenware made during the early 20th century Meiji period (1864-1911). I think they are showing buddhist monks with gilt highlights.

The vases depict the goddess Kannon with the white face (Gyanyin in Chinese) with a number of so-called "Imoortals".
Very common decorations on Japanese export Satsuma ware.
Regards,
Martin.
