Subject:Print by Kuniyasu
Posted By: Tom Aspden Thu, Apr 08, 2021 IP: 146.199.136.162

I just received this print that I deduced was by Kuniyasu (judging by the signature) although I wasn't able to find something of the same series or title. Could someone please translate the title (and signature/seal just for confirmation), as I would be most grateful!

Regards,
Tom

The print is signed “Kuniyasu ga“, below of the signature is the kiwame seal (for “approved“). The cartouche top right names the role and actor name: Iwafuji (岩ふじ) and Ichikawa Danjūrō (市川)団十郎). Depicted is Danjūrō VII, so it’s a scene from the play “Botan nicho hatsuga fumibako“ performed at the Kawarazaki theatre in Edo in 3/1831. The print is one sheet of a kabuki multisheet composition.

I forgot: On the lower edge of the detail photo of the signature is the top of the publisher logo visible: it should be Uemura Yohei (上村与兵衛) who used the 上 with long “feet“ as the top of his logo.

Thank you so much for the information, I had guessed there were other prints to this one, but it's good to know who is shown in this one!

Regards,
Tom

Your print depicts the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII per the cartouche in the upper right.

Cheers,
Stan
