Subject:Japanese Tea Cup Set
Posted By: Maurice Fri, Dec 30, 2011 IP: 50.131.4.245

Hi,
I have two ornate, what I think are Japanese meoto yunomi. I am looking for some information on them. My father bought them in Japan for my mother - probably in the 1950's and I've inherited them. The cups have gold colored rims, and each top "knot" on the covers are gold colored. They each have Japanese writing on the inside and a Japanese letter/word on the bottom. No English markings. Attached are three pictures. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Maurice

Hi Maurice,

These are Japanese indeed. The mark reads "Kutani". They could have had a little age when bought but not much.

Regards,

Arjan

Mark say Kutani, generic mark for area made. Is nice quality porcelain and decoration.

When larger-smaller pair, is for husband and wife, smaller is for woman despite woman usually work harder than man and need more calorie.

Probably new when purchased 1950s.

Good luck,
Cal

Thanks for the info. Do you think they are worth getting appraised or is it safe to say the sentimental value is the real value?
Thanks again,
Maurice

Bear in mind Japanese factories have make items in many millions for domestic and export for many decades.

Since your items not appeal to collectors modern particular-factory items, not have gloss of artist-signature, not antique, no special artistic value, there is little basis for think have much current sale-price 'value' even with nice quality.

If you use them, hand wash with great care.

Good luck,
Cal
