These are a mirror-image pair of probable Kyoto-origin stoneware vases dating to the late 19th-early 20th century, or circa the late Meiji period (1868-1912).

The base mark in kanji characters reads down from the top right as 'Made in Great (or Imperial) Japan by Hayashi Yasuzo(?)'. I've added a question mark, because I can't confirm the name, and Japanese characters may have a number of variant transcriptions.

The single character above the principal mark is the numeral 3 and probably is just a factory marking of some sort.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Made in Japan probably 2nd quarter 20th century before the end of World War II, by factory probably Kyoto area.

Good luck,

Hi Aaron,

Your vases are Japanese. For the moment I don't have a translation for the left characters (probably others can help with that) but the right ones reads "Dai Nippon" or great Japan in English. It's generaly accepted that "Dai" before "Nippon" indicates a dating of the Meiji period (1868-1912) so your vases are at least 100 years old. The three strokes on top just mean "three" and are meant to fit the vases together to make a pair. Your Satsuma-style (cracled earthenware) vases with moriage decoration(those raised dots) were probably made in Kyoto.

Regards,

Arjan
