Founded by emperor Songtsan Gampo in around 640, the Jokhang (also known as Lhaden Tsuglakhang) is the holiest shrine in Tibetan Buddhism. Barkor street, the main activity area of THF, is the circumambulation route for the Jokhang, already in existence in the 14th century. The Jokhang Temple has just been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
From The 1999 Annual Report:
Jokhang Temple: the monks' toilets were fitted with water and connected to sewers, and the bathrooms were further fitted with handwash basins, $270.
Beijing has nominated the Jokhang Temple for inclusion in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in the summer of 1999. It is hoped that the Jokhang will be inscribed during the next meeting of the World Heritage Committee in December 2000.
