Ikat, Lio people, Flores, Indonesia.

These large (2m. x 1.80m approx) cotton warp ikat clothes are men's sarongs of occasion, of ceremony, of status, or magical protective power. Normally sewn in a tube, these pieces are pictured here opened out, which allows better appreciation of the gatelike overall motif, undoubtedly descended, again, from the medieval double ikat silk patola cloth (except lower right which is indigenous animistic).
