Maharaja Bhupinder Singh ruled the Sikh kingdom of Patiala (modern Punjab state). He was known for his rich tastes, and he particularly loved spectacular jewelry. This photograph has become the archetypal representation of the "exotic" maharaja, but its splendor obscures Bhupinder Singh's important role as a religious and military leader.
