A modern interpretation of a traditional scene shows the Buddha preaching to a large audience in a rural setting. Founder of the world’s first missionary religion, the Buddha in his early sermons commissioned his disciples to “spread the Dharma (teachings) in the four directions and do so in the local dialects.” He then spent the remainder of his life wandering the cities, villages, and trade routes preaching to those from every walk of life, class, and caste in ancient India. One of the most renowned modern painters, Siddhimuni Shakya applied his artistry to break free of the symmetry and formalism of the tradition to fashion this masterpiece.
