Makara is a mythic water monster combining the features of a crocodile, elephant and fish, it is the vehicle of Goddess Ganga, the Gange river personified, and Varuna, the God of terrestrial waters and its magical powers realte to the fertility of water.

When a man is coming out of its mouth it symbolizes Initiation, the Door, the Passage: from Death to New Life, from Dark to Light, from Childhood to Full Mature age.
