Orissan ivory throne leg
India
17th century
Height 28 cm.

In the form of a mythological lion on a lotus base with a beaded frieze, the powerful beast is adorned with beaded trappings above a dancing female figure with her arms raised. His head is turned to the back with a ferocious face, with stepped upturned moustache and bulging eyes, The wide mouth showing large fangs.

The back of the throne leg is decorated with a Kirttimukha head and a scene showing a lion fighting with an elephant.
