"An early name for Thailand is Laem Thong, which translates as
'golden peninsula'. The words 'gold' and 'golden' are often associated
with place names throughout the region such as suvarnabhumi: 'Land of
Gold' thought to refer to the mainland including lower Burma and the
Thai Malay Peninsula and suvarnadvipa: 'Islands of Gold', which may
refer to the Indonesian Archipelago and/or Sumatra. This lecture will
focus on the development of gold working technology from the earliest
archaeological evidence in mainland Southeast Asia through to the elaborate
jewelry of the Javanese classical period."
