Sambandar
South India
Chola period, 13th century
H. cm. 44 (inc. 17,32)

Exquisitely cast, this piece depicts Sambandar dancing atop a lotus base over a square plinth. His left leg is raised and his left arm extended. He is clad in a belt with bells and elaborate jewellery adorns his ankles, arms, chest, neck and ears. Smiling, and with joyful almond-shaped eyes, he is wearing a tall conical headdress and is backed by a floral mandala, with a smooth dark patina overall.
