Diamond Baazuband (upper arm bracelet)

Deccan. India.
Early 18th century

Length: 10 cms.
Width: 3.8 cms.
Depth: 0.3 ems

Very fine diamond baazuband enameled on the reverse with floral motifs in red, green and white enamel. The baazuband is made of three sections, curved to fit perfectly on the upper arm (or neck). The center section is set with five flat cut diamond 'chokis' rectangular diamonds. This is very rare in Indian jewellery since diamonds were never faceted or cut but were usually shaped according to their natural form. The two side sections fold into the center section, showing the extreme flexibility of the piece This sleekness and flexibility is not evident in pieces of a later date.
